Opie, Eugene Lindsay
(5 jul. 1873, Staunton, Va., EE.UU.–12 mar. 1971, Bryn Mawr, Pa.).

Patólogo estadounidense. Obtuvo su M.D. en la Universidad Johns Hopkins. A comienzos de su carrera dedujo correctamente que la diabetes mellitus era producida por alteraciones degenerativas en los islotes de Langerhans y postuló que el bloqueo de la unión de los conductos biliares y pancreáticos causaba la pancreatitis aguda. Más tarde demostró que la tuberculosis (TB) se diseminaba por contacto, incluso de un miembro a otro de la familia. Sus trabajos alentaron el empleo de radiografías para detectar TB asintomáticas, los exámenes de la expectoración para predecir la contagiosidad y la inyección de bacilos tuberculosos muertos por calor para prevenir la infección.
